Registration Now Open for the EthnoConnection 2026 International Conference in Budapest

The abstract submission period has closed, marking the start of a new phase in the organization of the EthnoConnection 2026 international conference in Budapest: registration is now open for the event, which will take place from 18–20 October 2026 at the Museum of Ethnography.

The conference aims to create an international platform for museum professionals to engage in dialogue on the most pressing issues facing the sector today. The initiative is part of the Museum of Ethnography’s longterm commitment to fostering exchange between museum practice and theory.

The Museum of Ethnography in Budapest is one of the oldest ethnographic institutions in Europe, with over 150 years of collecting and research history. Its collections represent both Hungarian and international ethnography, while in recent years the museum has become an active participant in international professional discourse through its new, contemporary permanent exhibition and innovative programmes.

The central theme of the 2026 conference is: “The Temptation of Permanence – A critical approach to museums’ permanent exhibitions”, focusing on a critical rethinking of the permanent exhibition as a museum genre.

The conference seeks to address how the promise of permanence can be sustained in a rapidly changing social and technological environment, how long-term exhibitions can remain relevant, and what new approaches may shape future museum practices.

The two-and-a-half-day event is expected to attract more than 200 international participants, including museum professionals, curators, researchers, and cultural practitioners. The programme will feature an internationally renowned keynote speaker, six lead speakers from major European museums, and a wide range of expert contributors.

The organisers emphasise that the conference is not limited to ethnographic institutions but aims to engage a broader professional audience across the museum and heritage sectors.
