Time travel to 1862!

A journey through the lost photographs of the London World's Fair

On 18 May 2025, visitors to the Museum of Ethnography will have the chance to embark on a unique journey through time. The event day for the exhibition Hungary in Colour – Hidden Photographs from 1862 focuses on a series of folk costume photographs taken across Hungary’s historical regions and settlements, originally showcased at the 1862 International Exhibition in London.

What characterised Hungary at that time? What atmosphere defined this brief constitutional period? And how was it even possible that, as part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Hungarian people were able to represent themselves at the London World Exhibition?

On 18 May, there will be an excellent opportunity to delve into these questions. In addition to curator-led tours of Hungary in Colour, the museum will offer interactive educational games, workshops, and further themed guided tours for adults. Children can look forward to traditional citera music and a puppet performance by the Barboncás Troupe.

Please note that all programmes will be conducted in Hungarian.
